Reality TV figure slipping down in Los Angeles mayor’s race

Los Angeles City Councilwoman Nithya Raman — As more absentee ballots are counted, City Councilwoman Nithya Raman, a Democrat, is firming up as the second-place finisher in the primary for Los Angeles mayor which would place her on the November ballot.

As more mail ballots are counted in Los Angeles, reality television figure Spencer Pratt appears to be missing the second-place mark in the mayoral primary.

The second-place finisher will face off against the top vote getter, incumbent Mayor Karen Bass, in November’s general election.

As of the most recent tabulations, that would be City Councilwoman Nithya Raman.

Raman, a progressive who reached the council with backing from the Democratic Socialists of America, ran to the left of Bass, who entered office with a traditional liberal background deployed in the California Assembly and U.S. House.

Pratt’s campaign surged as he used his large social media following to reach voters with online video.

The results as of Monday evening had Bass with 34.32% and 275,992 votes, Raman with 229,576 votes or 28.55% and Pratt, a Republican, with 207,757 votes or 25.83%. With no candidate near a 50% majority, the top two will advance to November’s general election.

California doesn’t certify races until 30 days after election day, because of its dependence on mail-in ballots.

In the first tallies released after the June 2 primary, Pratt was in second place.

The vote tabulation generally takes days to complete in California elections, because a mail-in ballot is valid as long as it was postmarked on Election Day and received no later than seven days after the election. Every voter is mailed a ballot, though in-person polling places are available on Election Day and the preceding days.

California’s mail-in vote count has often been weighted toward Democrats since President Trump began to criticize the process, nudging Republican voters toward in-person polling places.
